In God We Trust Adopted as National Motto

Yesterday we had a post which noted the appearance of In God We Trust on US coinage after the passage of the Coinage Act of 1864.  The phrase became the national motto in 1956 pursuant to a Joint Resolution of Congress which should be celebrated for its brevity as well as for its substance:

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

That the national motto of the United States is hereby declared to be “In God we trust.´´

Approved July 30, 1956.

President Eisenhower summed up the sentiments that led to the adoption of “In God we trust” as the national motto in remarks he made on October 24, 1954 in observance of the 75th anniversary of the light bulb:

FAITH, faith and the American individual. Yes, it is on these two pillars that our future rests.

It was Thomas Edison who said: “Be courageous; be as brave as your fathers before you. Have faith. Go forward .”

Seventy-five years ago this very week, Tom Edison–a humble, typical sort of American–put this credo into action and gave a new light to the world.

It is faith that has made our Nation–has made it, and kept it free. Atheism substitutes men for the supreme creator and this leads inevitably to domination and dictatorship. But we believe–and it is because we believe that God intends all men to be free and equal that we demand free government. Our Government is servant, not master, our chosen representatives are our equals, not our czars or commissars.

We must jealously guard our foundation in faith. For on it rests the ability of the American individual to live and thrive in this blessed land-and to be able to help other less fortunate people to achieve freedom and individual opportunity. These we take for granted, but to others they are often only a wistful dream.

“In God we trust.” Often have we heard the words of this wonderful American motto. Let us make sure that familiarity has not made them meaningless for us.

We carry the torch of freedom as a sacred trust for all mankind. We do not believe that God intended the light that He created to be put out by men.

Soon we will be celebrating one of our holidays, one that typifies for me much of what we mean by the American freedom. That will be Halloween. On that evening I would particularly like to be, of course, with my grandchildren, for Halloween is one of those times when we Americans actually encourage the little individuals to be free to do things rather as they please. I hope you and your children have a gay evening and let’s all give a little prayer that their childish pranks will be the only kind of mischief with which we Americans must cope. But it can be a confident kind of a prayer too, for God has made us strong and faith has made and kept us free.

Good night.

I agree with the sentiments expressed by Ike although it is ironic to recall that Edison at best was a Deist and was accused by critics of being an atheist.

  1. God writes straight with crooked lines and He blesses us by straightening out our own crooked trajectories. The devil wants to posit doubt and fear and atheism and agnosticism, BUT GOD continues to get His message across, through even deists and doubters.

  2. Edison also lied to and cheated Nikolai Telsa, and the company he founded – General Electric – follows in his footsteps (GE CEO Jeff Immelt, Obama’s former jobs czar, GE which had owned MSNBC, Obama’s cheer leader).

  3. Thank you, Paul. I am ashamed of myself but I need to say this too. Thomas Edison promised Nicola Tesla one million dollars if the problem of DC, direct current, be solved. Tesla had already conceived the idea of alternating current to keep the heat and fires abated. Tesla had come to America to work with Edison and brought the concept of A.C. with him. When Tesla brought the idea to Edison, Edison reneged on his promise of one million dollars and laughed Tesla right out of his office. Tesla became so indignant that he went into the trenches and dug ditches for two years. A mind like Tesla’s was disregarded. That was when George Westinghouse employed Tesla to harness the electricity at Niagara (sp)Falls in what was to become General Electric.
Those who will not believe in Jesus Christ are damned to live what they believe. Thank you, Paul. I am ashamed of myself but I need to say this too. Tesla became so indignant that he went into the trenches and dug ditches for two years. A mind like Tesla’s was disregarded. That was when George Westinghouse employed Tesla to harness the electricity at Niagara Falls in what was to become General Electric. I did not know that General Electric had been taken over by Con Edison.
    .
Those who will not believe in Jesus Christ, true God and true man, are damned to live what they believe.

Our culture is taken over by ignorance. Bullyism is a learned behavior. Our Constitutional posterity are brought into existence by an infinite God and endowed with unalienable rights by an infinite God. Finite rights, rights that the state or government gives are finite rights, end when the states take these rights back or when the states themselves end.
    .
In the Preamble, the unchangeable purpose of our Constitution, are written the duties of the government. These duties are that the government must protect and provide for the infinite, unalienable human rights endowed by our infinite Creator. Government gives the individual human being a birth certificate and a tax bill.
    .
The infinite Supreme Sovereign Being gives man a share in HIs life through Jesus Christ, endowed into the human soul as perfect legal and moral innocence, Justice and immortality, infused into the one celled human being to direct growth and life. God gives life, unalienable human rights and freedom. The exercise of this freedom is expressed in our national motto: “In God we trust”
    .
Philip once wrote that he picks up a penny from the ground because of God being acknowledged on the coin, whereas, I only picked up the coin at that time because of Abraham Lincoln.
    .
The acknowledgement of God is an exercise in freedom of religion. To deny the people the freedom to acknowledge God on our coins as our national motto, as the atheist is wont to do, is the prohibition of freedom of religion. Every empty public square and space is a prohibition of freedom of religion. : “or prohibit the free exercise thereof.” There is that wonderful concept of God-given freedom again, exercised through the God-given free will of our immortal human souls.
    .
Atheism, the denial of freedom of religion, prohibiting the free exercise thereof, is unconstitutional.

  4. Here is the thing….having God on our money, in our pledge, etc. forces atheists to pay homage to a God they don’t believe in. Prayer in school? Its one thing to have a few minutes of quiet time at the start of the day when people can sit and either pray or meditate or just stare off into space. And its certainly fine if students pray on the playground. But do we really think its right to DEMAND that atheist students, or even just non-Christian student, pray to what they don’t believe? And if we just give them the option of opting out….that puts a target on their backs that bullies will be drawn to exploit. In terms of not having the 10 commandments or reference to God on our government buildings, is there really any harm in that? To me, its just acknowledging that we have non-Christian fellow citizens. Do they not deserve our respect? And in terms of the recent debate about the wedding cake thing in Arizona….an argument I heard from a more liberal perspective was that while a private group has all the freedom in the world to discriminate (like the Knights of Columbus accepting only males that follow church teaching), once you get involved in commerce, you are subject to anti-discrimination laws.

I see nothing wrong with not referencing God in our motto, pledge, or money. I see nothing wrong with having quiet time at the start of the school day rather than strictly prayer. As long as we Christians can preach and assemble, and not be forced to engage in acts that go contract to our faith, I don’t see how the accommodations made to atheists and non-Christian believers in the United States represent any kind of threat. Leave the fate of immortal souls to God. In this life, regardless of that, its just immoral to force non-believers to bend the knee.

  5. “That the national motto of the United States is hereby declared to be In God we trust.”
    Approved July 30th 1956-

When President Eisenhower was in office was their a question who God is?
Did he have to tell Americans that God is equally found in Allah Budda and Mother Earth? No!

The one true God, Jesus Christ 2nd person of the Holy Trinity is this God that we trust. It is so appalling to me that the words of President Eisenhower have no home in the hearts and mind of the radical left; “Our government is servant not master, our chosen representatives are our equals, not our czars and commissars.”

If the Obama presidency has illustrated one thing, it is it’s ability to lie cheat and through use of msm, convince Americans that faith in God is only secondary to faith in his administration.

The painful possibilities of Clinton mania, ( first woman pres. ) could continue the darkness of national sovereignty and the torch mentioned above might only emit a flicker of light.

Please make regular visits to Jesus found in adoration chapels near you. If you haven’t already become a weekly adorer I plead for you to do so…..for the sake of our freedoms our families and our future.

  6. Thou shalt not pray.

Yeah, the 1950’s and 60’s were before America became enlightened with abortion, class war, untrammeled divorce, gender victimology, race, and sexual orientation issues.

I went to public schools when they had “prayer.” Christ, Hirohito, Muhammad, Vishnu, Cluthu, et al were not ennunciated. It was generic and completely inoffensive to any reasonable ear. That qualiifier excludes libs and atheist-fascists.

“Congress shall make no law regarding establishment of religion.” The Const. says nothing about the judiciary’s power to establish a religion.

Is it right that atheism will be the de facto, court-established religion?

  7. Atheist-fascists? Ok, I must call fowl. Atheists are not all evil. We may think their souls are at risk, but they do show kindness, self-restraint, and the don’t all think or treat us as evil. I happen to have atheist family and friends, and if one of them ran for office….I would not automatically discount voting for them because of their lack of faith.

This is their country as well. The non-specific prayers still force them to pray to that which they don’t believe. We cannot claim to be fighting for religious liberty if we exclude them. And like I said…..the solution I suggested still allows prayer to exist on school grounds. So how are we Christians oppressed?

  8. Mary De Voe, you are correct in sentiment but some details are not right.

Thomas Edison founded General Electric and advocated use of direct current.
George Westinghouse founded Westinghouse Electric and advocated use of alternating current.
There was a big feud between them.
Thomas Edison used as propaganda the application of George Westinghouse’s alternating current in killing / death penalty (Edison used Westinghouse’s AC to kill elephants as a demonstration that AC is unsafe).
George Westinghouse got the alternating current idea from Nikola Tesla who was the real brains.
Thomas Edison cheated Nikola Tesla out of his rightful payment for designing the lighting at the Chicago World’s Fair.
Westinghouse Electric Company lasted through the 1970s and then died – the only thing that remains is Westinghouse Nuclear that still competes its Pressurized Water Reactor design against General Electric’s Boiling Water Reactor Design.
General Electric’s only big competitor world wide is Siemens – Westinghouse (except for nuclear power) is out of the picture.
The new nuclear power plants being built across the world are NOT General Electric’s ESBWR or ABWR (except in a few isolated instances like Taiwan’s Lungmen project which is a combined Taiwanese and GE project management disaster) – they are Westinghouse’s AP-1000.
Jeff Immelt doesn’t care – after Fukushima (whose reactors were all GE BWRs with Mark I containments) he said nuclear is too hard to do, so he sells wind turbines that always require spinning natural gas reserve backup.
General Electric has never ever trusted in God. NEVER.
General Electric committed major pollution effluent events world wide, especially in NY State and in western Massachusetts.
General Electric Health Care donates significant sums of money to Planned Parenthood.
I could go on, but I will stop for now.

  9. “Atheist-fascists? Ok, I must call fowl.” I call a fowl that tries to tell me what I can’t do or how to live a feathered fascist.

One positive in this situation: when you and I die they will not be anywhere near us.

  10. Thank you, Paul. There is so much to learn.
    .
“Atheists are not all evil. We may think their souls are at risk, but they do show kindness, self-restraint, and the don’t all think or treat us as evil. I happen to have atheist family and friends, and if one of them ran for office….I would not automatically discount voting for them because of their lack of faith.”

Atheists as individuals are to be tolerated. Freedom of religion must remain absolute, so when the atheist comes in search of the Truth, he is free to embrace Truth.
    .
Atheism denies the Supreme Sovereign Being, God, our Creator’s creation of, and endowment of the human being, composed of human body and rational, immortal human soul. The human soul, denied by atheism, is the seat of free will, intellect, and conscience. The human soul, denied, makes of every human being, a beast of burden for the state, (taxation without representation as the official refuses to acknowledge the human souls of his constituents), but if he is your friend, will you run surety for him? An atheist in the White House would deny the human conscience as Obama has done and disregard the civil rights of every citizen. The human person needs to be acknowledged by an infinite Creator and have infinite human rights. Rights the state gives, the state can take away.

Every school shooting has taken place in the classroom where the Ten Commandments, especially, “Thou shalt not kill” have been removed. Atheism carries responsibility for this carnage. Disrespect for the human being as a transcendent person through human sacrifice, pornography, sex slavery, and sodomy ignores the person’s destiny.
    .
Acknowledging the Supreme Sovereign Being, Three Sovereign Persons, acknowledges the sovereign personhood of each and every individual substance of a rational nature, the correct definition of the Person.

“This is their country as well”
    .
Well , not exactly. When an individual denies another individual his civil rights, he forfeits his own civil rights and becomes persona non-grata. The execution of capital punishment for 1st degree homicide is the removal of civil rights from the murderer.
    .
“The non-specific prayers still force them to pray to that which they don’t believe. We cannot claim to be fighting for religious liberty if we exclude them. And like I said…..the solution I suggested still allows prayer to exist on school grounds. So how are we Christians oppressed?”

The Supreme Court told Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the atheist, that she could go her own way. I believe that that was in Engel v. Vitale, 1962. The Supreme Court “tolerated” the atheist. Prayer, freedom of speech, was banned. Peaceable assembly at Christmas and Halloween and St. Valentine’s Day was denied.

Atheism denies every freedom of religion and tolerates no religious symbol or religious exercise, including the last will and testament of fallen soldiers to be buried under their Mt. Soledad Cross.
It would seem proper for you to use your God-given free will “to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity.”

  11. “having God on our money, in our pledge, etc. forces atheists to pay homage to a God they don’t believe in ”
    .
Poor atheists, they are forced to participate in a successful system, made successful by Judeo Christian principles.
You call it “our money” “our pledge” etc. You say “our” rather than “my” because it is a shared economy, not a personal one, but belonging to a community. The community that built this economy was basically Jews and Christians and their beliefs and social structures. Judeo-Christian principles that have shaped “our” economy developed over the last 4000 years with DEFERENCE for God, and have been shown effective.
An individual who want to participate with the rest of the U.S. in our shared economy is best to remember who brought them to the dance…. Whether it suits a relatively rare opinion or not, recognizing God is smart. Good for us. Life is better. On the other hand, not recognizing God is dumb. Living in disorder, with no clear end or purpose of life does not make prosperity.

Why would the people who know what works change it just to be nice to a small number of unsure of their origin or end.

  12. The Church of Scotland Act, passed by Parliament in 1921 is of some interest. It declares “This Church [the Church of Scotland] acknowledges the divine appointment and authority of the civil magistrate within his own sphere, and maintains its historic testimony to the duty of the nation acting in its corporate capacity to render homage to God, to acknowledge the Lord Jesus Christ to be King over the nations, to obey His laws, to reverence His ordinances, to honour His Church, and to promote in all appropriate ways the Kingdom of God. The Church and the State owe mutual duties to each other, and acting within their respective spheres may signally promote each other’s welfare.”

Parliament, perhaps wisely, did not spell out these “mutual duties,” but it left in force the Ministers Act 1693, “that the Lords of their Majesties Privy Councill and all other Magistrates Judges and Officers of Justice give all due assistance for makeing the Sentences and Censures of the Church and Judicatures thereof to be obeyed or otherways effectuall as accords”

The Act also provides that “Nothing contained in this Act or in any other Act affecting the Church of Scotland shall prejudice the recognition of any other Church in Scotland as a Christian Church protected by law in the exercise of its spiritual functions.”

  13. God bless Scotland.
    God help the USA.
By the way. Who was it that formed the free hospitals? Schools and orphanages?
Oh. Maybe if Madison Wisconsin’s charming group FFR existed then….

Only the fool saith there is no God.

  14. T. Shaw: My response is that not all atheists do this. There are plenty of atheists who would never dream of smashing down churches or bullying believers. So no, they are not all telling us what to do. Many of them just want to live their own lives.

Mary: Even people who reject the trinity might still believe in some sort of intelligent being that granted human beings natural rights. What is more, even if you don’t believe in such a being, you might still believe in natural rights for any number of reasons, and justify those rights on any number of grounds. For instance, the golden rule is common sense. Also, because human beings are flawed, it makes logical sense that no human should be given absolute power, which in turn justifies both democracy and the freedom to criticize the government. It is logically inconsistent to say “I demand freedom for my beliefs but I won’t tolerate yours”. I happen to believe that a divine being granted us rights, but to NOT believe in said being does not automatically imply you think all rights are gifts of the government to be taken away.

In terms of an atheist in the White House, the President of the United States is still limited by the voters, Congress, and the Courts. Regardless of what one may think of the President, many atheists would not take away freedom from others. Would we say that a Jewish person or a Muslim couldn’t run? Remember how worried this country was in its past about electing Catholics?

Anzlyne: Hypothetical example…For work (I don’t know your occupation, but I’m using a hypothetical here) you moved to a Muslim nation. Your kids enrolled in public school (lets say private schooling or home schooling are not options), and had to say a pledge that included reference to Mohammad. How would you feel?

  15. June of this year marks my thirteenth year assisting the elderly. I have had many privileges and witnessed many deaths. One week prior to the death of an proud atheist, I was called into her room. She hated my faith in Jesus, and I wasn’t sure what to expect when I answered her request.

She told me that she was scared. She said that “they” were after her and wouldn’t let her rest. I asked who was after her. She said the devils. I reassured her that the name above all names will help her. She said Jesus?
Yes. Repeat his name and believe in him, he is real and alive. The very next day she thanked me. She said she had never felt such peace. She started to believe. She died in her sleep six days later.

The last four things; Death Judgment Heaven or Hell.

  16. Michael Paterson-Seymour: “The Church and the State owe mutual duties to each other, and acting within their respective spheres may signally promote each other’s welfare.”
    .
“Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what is God’s.” God created Caesar and therefore, Caesar belongs to God. The principle of separation of church and state can only be understood as both being under God, from God and going to God.
    .
J.S, Person: How fitting your name is Person. Sovereign Personhood is endowed by our Creator into the immortal soul. Atheism rejects and refuses the Creator of sovereign Personhood. According to atheism, you, J. S. Person do not have personhood, nor sovereignty. The error of atheism is that it does not recognize the person, the individual person and the sovereignty of the individual person. Atheism has no sovereignty, nor personhood. Atheism only recognizes its own tenets which are lacking in truth. Atheism cannot and does not point to the real Truth of God become man. Therefore, in Atheism, man is recognized as an animal, a beast of burden to be herded, without immortality, or free will, or the freedom created for him by God. Anyone of these tenets of atheism are harmful and destructive of the humankind.
    .
Persons adhering to atheism deconstruct their own existence. God is existence, the Supreme Sovereign Being. If you exist, God exists.
    .
“Even people who reject the trinity might still believe in some sort of intelligent being that granted human beings natural rights.”
    .
God is LOVE and God loves. God, the Father, needs someone to love. God the Father loves His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ loves His Father, perfectly. The love WHO proceeds from the Father and the Son is the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, the Holy Spirit, in the first family, a community of love, a state of sovereign Persons freely willing to love one another perfectly.
    .
What does atheism have to offer?
    .
Read what you have written. You refer to the person of God as “that”, a thing. If I said: “J. S. Person, that writes, and refer to you as a thing, you would be insulted. Yet, you persist in doing just so, insulting all persons by referring to persons as things. The Person of God, all persons, great and small, are souls and are referred to as WHO…a person, who. You remember all the WHOs in WHOVILLE? Only persons are people and only God creates persons. Natural rights begin with respect, circumspect respect, acknowledgement of the human spirit and soul, the human being, in freedom, who atheism denies, allowing the fallen angels to incite riot, mayhem, murder and chaos. All hell breaks loose when God is denied.
    .
“For instance, the golden rule is common sense.” Love thy neighbor as thyself was preached by Jesus Christ and the prophets, first.
    .
“Also, because human beings are flawed, it makes logical sense that no human should be given absolute power, which in turn justifies both democracy and the freedom to criticize the government.” “Under God” WHO is perfection, absolute love and the virtue of Justice, satisfies this human need.
    .
““I demand freedom for my beliefs but I won’t tolerate yours”.” I said, if you read correctly, that atheists, as persons must be tolerated. Atheism as an error must be and is unconstitutional. First, the First Amendment inscribes freedom of religion. Religion is man’s response to the gift of Faith from God, in thought, word, press and peaceable assembly. Religion is man’s relationship with our Creator, a love affair. Secondly, atheism is a belief, like the world is flat. Atheism is not a religion. Atheism is a belief that man chooses to embrace to destroy religion among men, and our understanding of the dignity and immortality of the human being. The lust for power to conform and bully others is the hallmark of atheism.
    .
“I happen to believe that a divine being granted us rights,”” If you, person, believed in a Divine Being, you would capitalize your reference in respect.
    .
“but to NOT believe in said being does not automatically imply you think all rights are gifts of the government to be taken away.” Without God, government will make us all beasts of burden to totalitarianism. Without God, government cannot represent the human being as a person, composed of human body and rational, immortal human soul. The citizens’ constituency is not represented and the citizens are paying taxes and not be represented. Taxation without representation is a tyranny.
    .
“many atheists would not take away freedom from others.” Atheism does.
    .
“Would we say that a Jewish person or a Muslim couldn’t run? Remember how worried this country was in its past about electing Catholics?” There can be no religious test for public office. A religious test for public office is unconstitutional. So, why the religious discrimination against Catholics?
    .
“Your kids enrolled in public school (lets say private schooling or home schooling are not options), and had to say a pledge that included reference to Mohammad.”
In California minor children are being indoctrinated in being Muslims. America is being indoctrinated into atheism. Time to give the Trinity of God equal time.

  17. Yes. Philip: “She said that “they” were after her and wouldn’t let her rest. I asked who was after her. She said the devils. I reassured her that the name above all names will help her. She said Jesus? “-
    .
The devils will not help anyone to heaven. Offer up the devil’s torments and assaults on you to God for heaven and peace will reign.

  18. Atheism denies God, the infinite Supreme Sovereign Being, Who is three Persons in Trinity. Atheism denies the divinity of God. Atheism denies Divine Providence. Atheism rejects the human being, composed of body and soul, refuses to accept the sovereign personhood of the human being, made in the image and likeness of God, infinite human rights endowed by God, eternal life of the soul, to be judged by God in perfect Justice, to be loved by God in perfect Love and to be forgiven by God in perfect mercy.
Atheism denies freedom of free will and conscience.
Atheism admits to temporary human rights allotted by the state or other functionary as the community, or the human race, through belonging to the same species, natural man, Homo Sapiens, a human being.
    .
Atheism holds that when a man dies, he dies and his human rights die with him. The human being, according to atheism, may have no last will or testament. If man has no free will while he walked the earth, how can man have a last will, while he walks in eternity? No will, nor testament, no tradition, no founding principles, no freedom.

Government is collecting taxes from people and refusing to represent them as constituents, body and soul. By redefining man as an animal having no immortal human soul, government is overturning man’s eternal human rights and God’s eternal Truths and in a court of law this is perjury.
The government’s right to redefine man as having no rational soul, no conscience, no eternal life, no freedom and no right to be represented as constituents of government of the people, for the people and by the people does not exist.
Hobby Lobby has been paying taxes and government has neglected to represent the Green family, body and soul.
In the Court, when the attorney for the Green family represents the Green family, the lawyer represents the human persons of body and soul, conscience and free will. When the government lawyers representing the government refer to the Green family, the lawyers refer to the Green family, whom they have redefined to have no immortal, eternal life or human soul, and as such, are represented as constituents of government. The free will of the Green family is under attack by atheistic forces that deny the human soul. Government imposition of atheism is unconstitutional.
Being redefined as having no soul, no conscience, the people are paying taxes without being represented as constituents of government as they are, body and soul. Taxation without representation is unconstitutional.

  19. Mary DeVoe.
Thank you. I never considered offering the torments of the devils to our Lord.
When He was tormented by the spirits of the devils ( scourging crowning of thorns carrying of the cross ) He was offering those torments to the Father.

Today; Acts of the Apostles 4:9-10
“If we must answer today for a good deed done to a cripple and explain how he was restored to health, then you and all the people of Israel must realize that it was done in the Name of Jesus Christ.”

Peace Mary and Gods blessings always.
