Some of the scenes in El Cid (1961) look as if they are taken from a Medieval Book of Hours. No film better captures the bold spirit of the Middle Ages when most men understood that this vale of tears was only a small part of their existence, and Nobles and Peasants alike would each one day be judged by the King of Kings.
Outstanding. Let us hope and pray Trump is our El Cid as he fights, not Biden, but the very forces of hell.
It’s strange. In all the films I’ve watched over the years, this is one I haven’t. I’ve been meaning to for as long as I saw a small bit of it when I was young. And yet, as of now, I haven’t. I may need to remedy that.
I also have never seen it and it appears to be an amazing film.
In addition, the music for the soundtrack by Eastern European refugee Miklos Rozsa gives new meaning to the word stunning (available on YouTube).
I have it on my cell phone as favorite background music while I work. It is at once both music that is courageous and romantic.
Great clip….”say Amen.”
Biden’s oath, on the Holy Bible, swearing that he didn’t know that the Catholic Church has non-negotiables..one being abortion. [ Pope Benedict XVI ]
Maybe he doesn’t know? Maybe a Bishop should consult him. Not the Bishop of Rome, but one who believes that Pope Benedict’s words are worthy…that abortion is non-negotiable.
Thanks for the reminder of this movie.
I’ll watch it too.
I wonder how many days and hours it took just to shoot the tournament and mortal combat scenes.
Did anyone notice at the start of the second video clip, the oath-challenge scene between King Alfonso and Rodrigo, Rosza inserted the “Dies Irae” theme? Typical signature of the highly erudite composer
Lord Clarence MacDonald, the world’s foremost expert on tapestries, once remarked that the film most deliberately like a Medieval tapestry was Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.
And you know there’s no arguing with a Scottish lord!

Yeah baby!
That’s what haggis is all about.

In the early mid 70s I went to a summer training program on my university campus with the Christian group I was involved with. The program was called El Cid, after him. We actually watched the flick one night. Spoiler alert. What a weird ending. Heston riding dead on a horse in full armor.
For God, the Cid and Spain!
