The first of the English priest trained at the Douai seminary to be martyred for the “crime” of being a Catholic priest, he stoutly refused to save his life by acknowledging Queen Elizabeth I as Head of the Church of England. His fellow prisoners reported that the night before he died a strange bright light seemed to fill the cell he occupied. He was denied the privilege of addressing the crowd at his execution, and prayed quietly. Before he was hanged, drawn and quartered, he once again refused the attempt by the authorities to implicate his fellow Catholics.
