PopeWatch: Assisi Encyclical

So the new encyclical will be signed on October 3:

Pope Francis will travel to Assisi Oct. 3 to sign an encyclical on the social, political and economic obligations that flow from a belief that all people are children of God and therefore brothers and sisters to one another.

The Vatican press office, confirming the pope’s trip, said the document will be titled “Fratelli Tutti” in Italian. In English, the phrase could be translated as “Brothers and Sisters All,” but apparently it is inspired by what is known as St. Francis of Assisi’s “sixth admonition” to the friars, all of whom were men.

Conventual Franciscan Father Mauro Gambetti, custodian of the Assisi convent, said the document “will indicate to the world a style for the future and will give the church and people of goodwill the responsibility for building it together.”

“The pope is clearly inspired by Francis of Assisi who, in following Jesus, recognized in fraternity, lived under the sign of mutual and loving service, the horizon of a fulfilled and happy humanity,” Father Gambetti added.

Pope Francis is scheduled to arrive at the Assisi convent at 3 p.m. to celebrate Mass at the tomb of St. Francis and sign the document.

Go here to read the rest.  PopeWatch has been reading lately about Saint Francis of Assisi.  He had an immense impact on the Catholic world of his day, calling men and women to a close obedience to the commands of Christ.  He was universally hailed as a living Saint and his preaching went directly to the souls of the men and women who heard him.  He said virtually nothing about the secular issues of his day, in that, as in all things, modeling himself upon Christ.  Saint Francis has much to teach us, and an accurate encyclical about his life and mission would be one worth reading.

“Saint Francis has much to teach us, and an accurate encyclical about his life and mission would be one worth reading”. Agree.
But highly doubtful this will come from “Pope” Francis.

However, I am looking forward to Archbishop Vigano’s commentary on it.

The life of St. Francis , dedicated entirely to Christ, is a rebuke to the life of Pope Francis. Let’s start with whether God willed the diversity of religions in the same way he willed the diversity of races as Pope Francis insists. St. Francis would have a name for that, and it wouldn’t be pleasant for Pope Francis to hear.

Here you go.

It’s not often you can read a saint’s “Life” written by another saint.

Yes, children of God, but not all of us are “children”. My father used to say “Children can afford to be foolish, but not grown-assed men”. There are too many foolish grown men, these days.

No. He’s wrong, again.
Non-baptized are not children of God.
Galatians 3:26-29, “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

As JFK points out, there is a difference between being one of God’s creatures (as everything created is) and being one of God’s children.

As the site’s resident optimist, I have to say that this encyclical…might not turn out…entirely bad…compared to some other things? That’s the best I got.

If it owes more to the St. Francis of Bonaventure than to that of Brother Sun, Sister Moon, it will be, probably.

I know which way I’d bet though.

“entirely bad”
Imagine, you are going to serve your loving family a wonderful dinner of beef bourguignon. If you add human excrement to it, how much is acceptable? One pinch, one teaspoon or one tablespoon? It can’t be “entirely bad” can it?
Pinky, I’m not trying to pick on you, but bad and misleading teachings will have everlasting consequences.

OK, so not everyone has heard the phrase “damning with faint praise”.
