Open Owl Thread

A lot in the news to discuss and we haven’t had an Open Thread in a while.  The usual Open Thread rules apply:  be concise, be charitable and, above all be amusing.  Special attention is directed to commentary  on the events of the past few days.  I suspect it is going to be a very bumpy ride for the nation well into next year and the news cycle is beginning to reflect that.

The destroyers of innocence are at it again…California legislature -consensual sodomy with minors okay as long as the age difference is 1ess than 10 years. Someone please tell me I heard that incorrectly!

Oh good, an open thread! I’ve been waiting for this. Here goes:

Is it too much to ask of the California bishops that, if they’re not going to lead the fight for religious freedom, would they at least get off the sidelines and get behind the Evangelicals who are?

What are all you people talking about? I’ve turned off the TV and this is my first time on the internet in 6 months. Isn’t it Lent now?

This is funny. The other day I cracked on Jonah Goldberg becoming the very thing he once warned against, and now there’s support. NR’s Dan “baseballcrank” McLaughlin wonders how much of the country you would have to burn down in order to give the conservative movement the righteous chastisement he thinks it deserves, and Jonah offers to show him if someone would give him a map.

What’s the over/under on how long it takes him to repudiate the book that made him?

Remember how around Aug 15 every news outlet was repeating on an endless loop “There will be 200,000 deaths from COVID-19 by Labor Day”? Well, we’re at least 10,000 deaths short. And beer in mind, the number was over 170,000 when they were making those claims.

Is there going to be anyone in the media that notes that their predictions fell short? Of course not. Instead they are predicting over 400,000 deaths by the end of the year. Not going to post links because I don’t want to give them traffic, but you can find stories on this on CNBC, USA Today, Daily Mail and others. Their source are the IHME models, which have overshot every single time but surely this time they’ll be on target!

Digging into these IHME projections, they claim that if current restrictions are dropped, then 12,000 people could die per day by Jan 1. Or if we’re just in the realm of “could” the top bound of their confidence interval is actually 19.7k per day. For comparison at its absolute worst the number of people dying per day was around 2.3k.

Their models seem bizarre beyond just the ridiculous high numbers. For example, they have projections for mobility” which is actually some measure of how much people travel from cellphone data. In the case of no mandates it just increases at a constant rate. But in the projection for current mandates or no lockdowns but universal mask usage the mobility drops at sharp intervals at seemingly random days; the “mask” scenario actually shows a sharp decrease in movement at Christmas though the other two scenarios show a slight increase.

Heard on the news Biden is saying we need his leadership because the economy isn’t recovering fast enough.

Hey Joe, you could demonstrate that vaunted leadership by getting on the phone and getting your fellow Democrats in governor’s mansions across the country to end the shutdowns now.

But that would sort if tend to give the game away, wouldn’t it?

The current unemployment rate is 8.4%. The unemployment rate at the beginning of 2012 was 8.5%. This was after the Obama-Administration had all of 2009-2011 to work on the issue, and with democrat control of both houses of congress for the first two years.

Even with all the sabotaging that they are doing the President is still doing a better job than Biden ever did.
