Other Than That Mrs. Lincoln, How Was the Play?

The Republicans suffered a crushing defeat in the midterms, and there is no way to sugarcoat it.  In the Senate, the Democrats will have at least 54 seats and may have as many as 56 if Alaska and Mississippi, yes Mississippi, fall to them.  In the House it is predicted that the Democrats have gained an 81 seat majority:  258 Democrats to 177 Republicans.  The Republicans are the weakest they have been since winning the Congressional elections in 1994.

In governorships the Democrats have 29 to 20 and may have 30 if the Democrat wins in Kansas.

Why?  In H.G. Welles Outline of History Welles posited that Napoleon lost the battle of Waterloo because God had grown bored with him.  I think the American people have simply grown bored with President Trump.  After his stunning come back in 2024, Trump perceived himself as invincible.  Thus his jokes about Canada being the 51st state, moving in on Greenland, the constant middle of the night rants, the insistence that tariffs would be our path to prosperity, etc.  All that could have been forgiven but for two factors:  too many Americans convinced he was doing nothing in regard to the economy that was benefiting them, and their opposition to the Iran war.  Now I believe that the economy is fairly good, and that the Iran war is a necessary fight, but as Lincoln noted:

In this and like communities, public sentiment is everything. With public sentiment, nothing can fail; without it nothing can succeed. Consequently he who moulds public sentiment, goes deeper than he who enacts statutes or pronounces decisions. He makes statutes and decisions possible or impossible to be executed.

Trump made no effort to convince the American people on the economy or the Iraq War, nor did the GOP, and that was a fatal mistake. Trump is now the lamest of lame ducks and the Republicans have a huge electoral hole to climb out of.  The Democrats did not so much win last night, as the Republicans and Trump lost, and lost badly.  Much more in the days to come.
