If it is too dangerous for the shepherd, it is too dangerous for the sheep. Being in a war zone is a hard thing. The history of the Church is replete with clergy faithfully going about their duties in appalling conditions. That tradition should be maintained, even at the cost of the lives of the shepherds. This was a disastrous error. I am not implying cowardice on the part of the Cardinal. I think this was probably the typical sort of brilliant idea we have come to expect from the Vatican, and the Cardinal may be acting under obedience.

I could get evacuating from Iran as he would likely be a prime target for a hostage or worse and to deny the regime that option… but perhaps it would have been a lot wiser to stay in the region for the optics.
