May all the corporate sharks who have profited from hiring illegals while shafting ordinary Americans suffer the same fate.
Better yet- let the shuttered plant be bought by an *independent* operator and reduce the monopolistic nature of the meat processing industry!
I guess the price of beef isn’t going to come down any time soon.
Largely dependent on what Trump does with imports. He could tank the market. Some of my cattleman neighbors are worried he will.
Until our recent move, we had a long -time relationship with a family-operated beef and lamb producer in Idaho; and the obstacles they face even though their two college-age kids help them (no pay of course) are formidable. The cost of feed, the problem with drought years, and risks from disease and pests push up veterinary costs.
They also have had to hunt for meat processors. The meat processors are also being put out of business by the many new myriad fed USDA “food safety” regulations, including a new Biden-era regulation greatly enabling lawsuits against the producers. If you look up “Biden Admin increases regulation of meat/beef producers,” you will see many stories of the loon Biden people’s “war on beef.”
The small beef producers like our friends had to pay a large amount to the mid-level meat processor they used—and had to travel about 50 miles to N Utah with their cattle and sheep, very costly—because the energy and cooling cost for a meat-processor, especially under Biden was through the roof, and there are so few left. Also there are not many skilled butchers that can work in a processing facility, and those who do so can demand a tidy hourly salary (forget the traditional high-wage professions: become a skilled meat cutter).
Little wonder that cattle herders are giving up.
No more Tyson for me.
