Pope Leo on Cinema

I think it was Pius XII who began the pernicious papal custom of commenting on everything under the sun whenever the Vatican hosted a special event.  Sometimes the papal comments are wise, occasionally funny and often “meh”.  What they have in common is that they usually have bupkis to do with Catholicism.  If He had wished to, Christ could have provided us with endless comments on the passing scene, because He lived in interesting times.  Instead, His focus was always on His mission.  When a man wished to involve him in a struggle over a legacy, Christ declined to do so, noting that he had not been appointed to be a judge in that matter.  Anything that was outside of His mission, to save as many from Hell as He could, was of no interest to Him.

Popes have a relatively straight forward task:  to preach the Gospel and to defend the teachings of the Church.  When they go beyond that mandate, at best they waste time, and at worst they neglect those essential tasks for a pope.  A pope who could say with Saint Paul, “I preach nothing but Christ and Him crucified.” would be a refreshing change.

Cinema? Pope Leo, really?
Nichole Kidmen’s recorded monologue at the beginning of every AMC theater presentation is a form of torture imo, and then this PSA from Rome.

The “beating hearts of our communities” are found in The Catholic Church.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus unfolds the meaningful plot in each life. Then our minds are truly educated, our imagination broadens and pain is valued as free will offering which united with Christs sufferings reach beyond time, rippling throughout communities, changing hearts and fulfilling the role that each creature was made for.

What is this word salad manure? None of the Apostles praised the Greek theatres of the Greco-Roman society in which they lived? So why is this “Vicar of Christ” praising secular cinema? Is he now ingratiating himself with Hollywood elitists as he has with liberal progressive politicians?

But woe to that man who talketh during the film! For whosoever that talketh during the presentation of the film shall be cast out by the ushers into the darkness outside where there is wailing and grinding of teeth!

He waxes more eloquent about the theater than the Church 💔

The essence of the theater is deception, images that are really something less. (“Jesus” is really just Jim Caviezel)

The essence of the Mass is Truth, what is seen is really something *more* That disc of wheat is really our Lord and Savior.

Sad that he does not seem to know…

When I enter into a “cinema”, first thing I do is head for the refreshments stand to get my bushel tub of popcorn and my jeroboam of soda. Then. I go watch a “movie”.
