The reason for this is that they recognized each other as brothers. Nothing will bring that brotherhood closer than being in a trench or in this case a Sunken Road facing imminent death. It’s the same thing as the sadness that a sailor feels watching the abandonment of their sailor opponents to drowning or sharks after a battle at sea. Death is the most egalitarian of all experiences.
