It is hard perhaps to convey the enormity of this deed, for it is almost impossible to transport it to other countries and different circumstances. Alec Douglas-Home kidnapped and murdered by Special Branch detectives? Senator Robert F. Kennedy kidnapped and murdered by the F.B.I.? Unthinkable, one might say. And that is the point: in Spain in the summer of 1936, the unthinkable had become normal.

History rarely repeats itself, but it often has disturbing echoes. The murder of Sotelo convinced a number of Spanish generals to throw in their lot with the conspiracy of some of the other Spanish generals to overthrow the Republic. If a distinguished member of the Spanish legislature like Sotelo could be casually murdered by the Left, who was safe? Francisco Franco in 1960 stated that it was Sotelo’s murder which gave the Rising the strength to succeed. Each act of violence instructs those who learn of it, and the lesson taught is rarely the one the perpetrators of the violence sought to teach.
Please allow me to share this morning prayer that is a part of my morning offerings.
I believe it may be helpful for others as it is for me. The recent political assassination is prompting me to share it.
We don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but we do know who does. Glory to Him now and forever;
