Two iron laws of History:Â don’t bet against the Catholic Church and don’t bet against the Jews.

Donald R. McClarey
Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
Amen to that. I do, however, question the OP’s inclusion of the Crusades as somehow directed against the Jews. Did I miss a lesson in my Church history class?
Some Crusaders of the First Crusade engaged in an orgy of Jew killing, mostly in Germany. (The Germans often have a lust for Jewish blood.) They were condemned by bishops and the Pope.
As a Louisianian, it brought a smile to see the most infamous of our politicians quoted here. Among the many other quotable quips he said, this one really sums up his extraordinary machine: “I can take a dead man and beat a live one anytime.”
Which reminds me of another infamous politician, Edwin Edwards (a Cajun, like me), who, in his run against David Duke, famously said, “The only way I’ll lose is if I’m caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy .”
Ahh … Louisiana politics.
According to some, you might include the USA in that list.

“I’m mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore.” Huey Long. One of my favorites.
