Go here to read a good, mirabile dictu!, wikipedia article on the Treaty of Tripoli (1797). It would have amused the Founders greatly to learn that 21st century secularists have seized upon that treaty to prove that the US was not a Christian nation, as the treaty was an unsuccessful attempt to hoodwink the Barbary Pirates into not attacking American shipping in the Mediterranean, and in any case that treaty was superseded by subsequent treaties after our two wars with the Pirates. (That whole “shores of tripoli” the jarheads sing about.) This shows the perils when ideologues seize upon a historical document without understanding the underlying history.
Western Civilisation is a direct result of Christianity. This woman doesn’t know what she is talking about. Spoken like a typical leftie, spoilt since birth, with the freedoms given to her by her western civilised country she happened to be born in. She didn’t even earn her western freedom. It was pure luck. And her arrogance and lack of appreciation of this fact just amplifies her arrogant privilege.
If she feels so strongly about Christianity offering no value to western democracy then perhaps she may want to move to India. That’s a secular state. She may struggle with the sub-standard ammenities but hey- India welcomes everyone too!
When a people or state is secular, it merely means that they claim not to base their beliefs on anything higher than mankind.
Considering mankind’s track record, it is surprising that people or states claim to be secular.
Perhaps, one day, this woman will awake to this realization. Life lived in a non-Chistian way is life lived without regard for neighbor beyond the extent that the neighbor can be used for oneself or must be protected against. Nice, kind, mercy, and generous do not have secular underpinnings beyond these self serving goals. That is why they diminish in our current age.
Kim is a twit. The Founding Fathers never intended to have a state church while understanding the importance of Christianity, whether or not they were Christians.
This rubs secularists and monarchists the wrong way. Well, it’s the way it is…nobody’s idea of perfect, but it functions.
Chesterton once said that a true secular state “minds its own business”. We would say: “stays in its lane”, and doesn’t mess with marriage, family, education and things best left to local institutions (including churches) and tradition (his “democracy of the dead”). Our modern secular state claims omnicompetence, restricted solely by current politics.
Both our Declaration 1776 and our Constitution make it crystal that we are a CHRISTian nation. Note well that they chose every word very carefully in 1787 and even had vigorous debate about many of them. And this was/is in the final version: “done in Convention by the Unanimous Consent of the States present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven and of the Independence of the United States of America the Twelfth In witness whereof We have hereunto subscribed our Names,”.
They were free, of course, to simply list the year, but chose to include “our Lord” [caps in the original].
No other god, goddess, demigod, or deity was included.
Proud to say Texas Constitution begins: “Humbly invoking the blessings of Almighty God, the people of the State of Texas, do ordain and establish this Constitution.”

PS: Been out of writing since Aug 1-have begun full time teaching 8th grade at a Catholic Classical School [some minor proof of the existence of God that a 78 year young guy can pull this off].. News flash: there is HOPE. Wish y’all could hear my students recite morning prayers standing reverently, hear them sing in gregorian chant and sing Salve Regina after daily Mass, hear them recite the first declension noun endings, and see them line up for regular confession. Deo Gratias!
@ guy mcclung.
Your growing Saints!
Btw……who counting years?
God bless your soul.
The USA is protected by “divine Providence”, and authorized by the signers’ “Sacred Honor.”
Thank You: Guy McClung
“The United States is not a Christian nation.”
Why would a secular Republic have Freedom of Religion as its first Freedom?
Why would Jefferson write about a “wall of separation of church and state?
Why does our Declaration of Independence say that “all men are created equal by their Creator”? Diversity, equality and inclusion by “their Creator”.
“the Barbary pirates ritually declared war each year on all Christian nations.”
Is this the reason Thomas Jefferson removed all mention of Jesus Christ from his bible? The Church underground.
Kinda like in the play Pirates of Penzance where the General declares he’s an orphan so they won’t attack them bc the pirates have a soft spot for orphans- not attack
