Requiescat In Pace: Jim Lovell

Astronaut James Lovell, Junior, has passed away at age 97.  A Navy pilot he qualified to be an astronaut in 1962.  He flew in space on Gemini 7 and Gemini 12.  He served as navigator on Apollo 8 which attained lunar orbit at Christmas 1968.

He was the commander of Apollo 13.  The planned moon landing was aborted due to a fire, and the crew skillfully slingshotted around the moon to gain the momentum to successfully return to earth, with Lovell adjusting the course twice.  The term hero is vastly overused in our time, but Lovell and his space faring colleagues were heroes.

He and his wife Marilyn had four kids, two boys and two girls.  They were married 71 years until her death in 2023.  A religious man, he has now embarked on the greatest journey that a man can have.  Godspeed Jim Lovell.

Amen. Still remember listening to that Christmas radio broadcast from Apollo 8. All four of us around the kitchen table with a portable AM radio, listening to WBBM.

Got to meet him once, at a conference for Eagle Scouts. I didn’t know him, but I felt like I did. Great man. RIP.
