Recognizing one’s own limitations may well be the most difficult step to humility. It usually takes hitting rock bottom, a la the Prodigal Son.
For me, it was, to put it charitably, surviving a self-imposed brush with death. And even then, it took months to even begin how to take the right lesson from it.
God gives us all the time in the world.
Love Flannery O’Connor! May she rest in peace. If any of you have not read her masterful short stories, I would encourage you very strongly. But be warned: they are for grown-ups; she writes about real people with true-to-life faults and problems. I cannot say enough good things about her.
Some of the great classics: “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”; “A Temple of the Holy Ghost”; “The Displaced Person.” Many more, of course.
