During the reign of Bloody Elizabeth, Saint Nicholas Owen, a carpenter and lay brother of the Jesuits, made hundreds of priest holes around the country and saved countless lives of priests as a result. When he was finally captured, he refused to reveal the location of the priest holes he had made to the authorities, and died under torture, taking his secrets to the next world. The Jesuit Superior of the mission to England, Father Henry Garnet, SJ, said of him:
“I verily think no man can be said to have done more good of all those who laboured in the English vineyard. He was the immediate occasion of saving the lives of many hundreds of persons, both ecclesiastical and secular.”
As my Bride said to me, doubtless Saint Joseph offered him a job when he reached Heaven.

I have a son named after him, partly because he was born when we were staring down the likelihood of President Hillary and the need for priest holes.
