No matter how wasteful and corrupt you think Federal spending can be, you are underestimating the problem.

That clattering sound you hear is federal judges rushing to be the first to issue a worldwide injunction forcing the federal government to fund foreign universities.

One woman on a board I frequent referred to the phenomenon as the ‘lawn sprinkler of cash’. If we want to end it, there has to be a default settling that ‘grants, subsidies, and contributions’ are defined as embezzlement unless they are expressly permitted, and they are expressly permitted only under a half dozen precisely defined circumstances. IMO, in the case of a foreign government and its affiliates, any aid should (by default) be in the form of services, equipment, and credits to buy equipment, with very little in the way of cash, vouchers, or comestibles (bar for disaster relief or real property rental). A country as affluent as Australia should not be getting anything bar what they’re due under the terms of our military alliance.

Yes. Donald McClarey, why are American tax payers funding Australian universities? My grandchildren are still paying off their student loans.

Ingrates. America will be verbally assaulted and criminally accused as happened by Puerto Rico.

The US has never funded University students HECS loans for Australian students. Australian Universities are funded through Australian Commonwealth government grants and student fees through government backed student loans. The US do not pay for Australian students university fees.

The cuts are for university research grants, of which the US contributes half to research schemes such as medical, scientific research.

And it’s not automatically cut. Some have been paused until they confirm they are adhering to certain guidelines.

“Some of the questions Trump has sent to Australian universities to justify US funding:

1. Does your organization encourage free speech and encourage open debate and free sharing of information?

2. Can you confirm that your organization does not work with entities associated with communist, socialist, or totalitarian parties, or any party that espouses anti-American beliefs?

3. Can you confirm that your organization has not received ANY funding from the PRC (including Confucius Institutes and/or partnered with Chinese state or non-state actors), Russia, Cuba, or Iran?

4. Can you confirm this is not a climate or “environmental justice” project or include such elements?
Does this project directly contribute to limiting illegal immigration or strengthening US border security?”

These are standard questions asked by US run corporations when operating with partners abroad.

Trump does not like PM Anthony Albanese or The US Ambassador Kevin Rudd. At all.

In a substantially identical way …

If you love superior acting people deciding where best to spend your money, then the Annual Appeal is for you! 👍
If on the other hand you are grown-up enough to spend your money on the causes *you* decide are worthwhile, forego it and donate directly.
The bishops want full participation, but I don’t really care, Margaret!

The annual diocesan omnibus spending package – just another great idea adopted from the secular world.
