There was a nearly identical picture of JPII in the 1-2 weeks before he died.
We certainly know we aren’t getting the whole truth. Beyond that, I don’t know what to think.

I know this is not the point of the picture, but … the absolute state of the post-Vatican II ceremonies! The tabernacle (expressionistic cube) in the corner without adornments of any kind; the sloppy altar cloth; the after-thought-esque crucifix; two candles off to one side (this is the non plus ultra of Italian Sisters’ orthodoxy; they simply cannot conceive of an altar that doesn’t have two small candles off to one side and a pot of flowers or a plant on the opposite side–the candleholders are preferably heavy, squat and abstract).
Are there no *trustworthy* bishops who can say that they recently saw the pope and confirm that he lives?
It is said we get the clergy we deserve 💔

No clue what Dreher fancies ‘something terrible’ might be. Francis is an 88 year old man with a set of infections commonly lethal to the very old. I doubt it would surprise anyone to learn he was non compos mentis due to his ailments or the medication regimen.
