It is amazing how much mental gymnastics have to be done in order to make a claim that reading the Bible would stop one from being Catholic, not to mention having to be ignorant of history, intentionally or otherwise.
A family member who left the Church and became an evangelical said the Bible was his reasoning for doing so, but the reality was he was upset at things going on (abuse, coverups, etc.) and *then* went and looked for the rationale in Scripture not to be Catholic.
Some very simple refutes:
“Bible?? Where did the Bible come from?”
“Made a Bishop?? How does that work?”
“Founded?? Jesus Founded the Church that would laster be called Universal.”
“Destroyed?? Jesus promised HIS Church would not be destroyed.”
“Meal?? The Church has Taught that the Eucharist is Christ body, soul and divinity for 2025 years.?
“Ok, we’ve come full circle… Please Read John 6.”
This said, I do have high respect for many evangelicals, they obviously have a stumbling block in their minds. God Knows there are plenty of clerical and other stumbling blocks today.
If I left the Catholic Church, it would be impossible for me to be a Protestant. I know too much about their twisted history to embrace it. I couldn’t fake it till I make it. Judaism , with its Talmudic contradictions, would strain my brain. Islam, with its bloody history, repulses me. Paganism, likewise. Nope, I’ll stay Catholic.
Catholicism is the most reasonable, logical, true relationship with God any human being can have. Religion is a response to the gift of Faith from God.
To quote the Rock, Saint Peter: “To Whom should we go”? When asked by Jesus about staying or leaving.
Mr. Casey is doing great work on Twitter / X in debunking Protestant Evangelical heresies.
Holy Scripture has been revised several times without the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the love Who proceeds from the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit is God.
To whom it may concern: It would be polite, at least, to post a substantive response to our comments rather than simply to down-vote them. If, for example, you disagree with what Mary De Voe said in her second comment above, why not explain yourself? I believe any of the “regulars” here would do so. Just a thought. Thank you.
With a horrible, possibly apostate, Pope and a group of Bishops who, as a group, can be at be described as cowards, one is left with the words of Simon Peter to our Lord: “To whom shall we go…..”. To paraphrase an old saying, with a history of so many rogue Popes and unworthy leaders being unable to destroy the Church (despite their seemingly best efforts), its ancient teachings must be true.
Unjohn did not say that this person Unjohn has indeed read the Bible. I have read very few parts of it-back when I knew Greek. I have read translations of the Bible, but almost none of the Bible itself. Perhaps Unjohn can point me to the place in the Bible that says in future [after God stops inspiring writers of Holy Scriptiure]: 1. translations are allowed and, 2. somewhat important, how we will know which translation [or translations] is the correct one. If one pays attention to the readings at the Mass and is of advanced age one has probably heard or read a good part of both Testaments.
Frank and Stephen – I like both your comments. And agree.
