No wonder they called it “The Beast..”
Are you referring the “The Car” – or “The President” ? 😆
He was a large man.
Taft as to filling the back seat. He was a lot of President, and would later be a lot of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. When he was Governor of the Philippines, the troops sang this little ditty: “They say I’ve got brown brothers here, but me I draw the line. They may be brothers of Big Bill Taft, but they ain’t no kin of mine.” After the suppression of the Filipino Revolt, a bloody fight, the US implemented a successful hearts and minds strategy, which included an elected Filipino legislature to prepare the country for eventual independence. Some of the troops fell in love with that beautiful country, but most did not and wanted to go home.

The Taft memorial in Arlington National Cemetery is only a couple hundred yards from where my grandparents are buried – it is one of my stops every time I go.
There was much that was great about the man, but he always said that he was no politician which he proved in 1912.
