You know you are among Catholics when they are devoted to Mary, the Mother of God. You can’t love Christ and hate His Mother.

a quote from my sister-in-law who, incidentally, was married at the Basilica of Notre Dame something that all of us just wish for. Her comment was “Mary was scary.” of course, she converted to Presbyterianism. #FrozenChosen. I asked my brother why his wife left Catholicism, and he said she wanted to preach. I think she is an elder in a Presbyterian Church with about 30 members that my brother is supporting. But then again, those of us that know that our salvation is not assured cling to Mary as the example of what it means to be a disciple. The only reason I can think of that Mary would be scary would be if you were not listening to her son.
Mary is not scary.
In fact Mary is the complete opposite:
She accepted Gods calling to be a young teen mother, had to give birth in the worst conditions, was displaced from her home with her family multiple times, never opened her mouth when her little boy wandered off and went missing. Then finally, watched her Son be brutally tortured and killed on a cross, knowing full well He was not guilty of any crime. All with full acceptance to what unfolded. Mary never ordered or talked over her Son’s 12 followers and stood in the background in full submission, even after Her Son rose from the dead.
Perhaps some feminist don’t like the fact Mary took the path of obedience, submission and acceptance of Gods will for Her life. That would infuriate a feminist, gas-lighting Mary as “scary”.

Well said: nothing more need be said.
“I asked my brother why his wife left Catholicism, and he said she wanted to preach.”
I have long had the impression that Mary IS scary to many “modern” women, Catholics included. They perceive Mary’s humility and holiness… confirming the Church as a patriarchy, one which practices intense misogyny. Many seem to consider that a woman will not be “equal” to a man until the Church agrees to ordain women as priests. They don’t like the idea of any woman being a stay-at-home Mom.
They do not admit to understanding how this detracts fundamentally from their womanhood in particular, and mankind in general.
