I Believe It

I recall that the Obamas endorsed Harris in a very perfunctory cell phone call.  Biden got back at those who forced him out by making certain that the candidate who replaced him was a completely inept politician.  Losing campaigns usually produce forgettable memoirs.  Perhaps not so forgettable this time.

How fitting.

They really do eat their own.
Take God off your platform and watch what happens. They all deserve each other.

This may be the only time in my life I am eager for the campaign books.

I used to say Adlai Stevenson was the worst major party candidate for president of the past 100+ years, but he has been surpassed by John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and now Harris who can claim the title of worst major party candidate since the turn of the 20th century.

Not sure why you’d trash Stevenson. He had his deficits (someone pointed out he was the first notable presidential candidate to run as a critic of American culture and not a celebrant), but he had something to offer. They’ve never produced anyone better in the last sixty-odd years.

I wouldn’t know how seriously to take these contentions. Former presidents and outgoing presidents are usually hands-off about factional disputes. Obama is a vain man, so him inserting himself would not surprise me. What made the situation unusual is that the identity of the people actually running the government is uncertain and BO could argue that his intervention wasn’t any more illegitimate than anyone else’s.

I do wish former occupants of the White House adhered to the Jacqueline Bouvier / Bess Truman model and that official accommodations for former presidents and their households assumed that model.

One thing we learned in 2020 is that Democratic primary voters have no interest in people of genuine accomplishment (Bloomberg, Yang, Delaney), no interest in people with a variety of experience (Hickenlooper), and no interest in people who know how to appeal to and deal with the opposition (Bullock).

I think they had backed themselves into a corner long before any “convention”
Unless you showed through very public proofs the incompetence and/or undesirability of a VP who was a woman of color, the party of race could not effectively sideline her. That would have looked bad even to addled Dems. They had no excuse to pass over such a “historic” candidate and Kamala was convinced it was her turn.

I totally believe this, Obama’s endorsement came after a noticeable delay. But my question is: Was Biden more aware than he appeared, or is Jill more shrewd than I gave her credit for?

The “cult” of personality versus the economy.

First woman president. 0

Serious former President
who kept most his promises
when he was in office. 1

And banking on the killing of innocent children as a cornerstone of her run for the presidency was gangster.

It looks like Barack Obama should have taken his own advice. After all, he famously said “Never underestimate Joe’s ability to #%!! things up!”.

And already gearing up for internal party suicide in 2028 is Gavin Newsome and company. Possibly all of this will divert the public’s attention to the point where President Trump will be able to get the work done he was elected to do.
