Canonizing rulers is normally a bad idea, absent the ruler dying a martyr’s death or many miracles occurring following his death. In this case the King is noted for temporarily abdicating in order to avoid having to sign an abortion bill. Temporarily giving up a throne and them immediately resuming it strikes me as a null sacrifice. Saint Thomas More, a statesman who gave up his life for the Faith, was not canonized until four centuries after his death. The King, who by all accounts was personally devout, should wait until at least eight centuries after his death.

Donald R. McClarey
Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
It was publicly known that that it would be temporary. If he was serious, he would have let the crisis continue and forced the issue. Was he King or just a dressed up notary? I was very disappointed at the time.
Amen, Donald and JFK. Incidentally, here is yet another mark against the Express Lane canonization process bequeathed to us by JP2. I pray that some future Pope does away with those innovations.
I’m very greatful that St. Pope JP II fast tracked St. Faustina and St. Maximillian Kolbe.
I’ve personally experienced their efficaciousness in petitioning them for others I’ve minister too as well as having received graces myself via their help.
I do understand your points, however. Above is exhibit A. I don’t see PF as being an equal to St. Pope JPII. Just my opinion.
It’s just a desperate attempt to bring Belgium back to Catholicism. Only a miracle will make this happen. Time will tell if the late King will bring about this miracle. The Churches are still standing, they’re just begging for parishioners.
I’m ok with the process, and the temporary abdication, but I’m also on board with the eight centuries plan. Or at least two – More would have been recognized sooner, but for expediency in the other direction.
The saint making factory rolls on. This is a very low bar, indeed.
