Linemen, switchyard workers, nuclear power plant personnel – we keep your lights on and your HVAC running 24 / 7 / 365. Many was the day when I would be called into work at 2 am during a blizzard in upstate NY to fix some problem that necessitated dropping reactor power by 10%. I cannot imagine the conditions in which linemen work routinely. So send up a Hail Mary for these linemen, switchyard workers, and power plant personnel. It’s easy to take for granted that the lights in your home come on instantly when flipping a switch, forgetting about all the men and women working tirelessly behind the scenes for your comfort and convenience.

After the linemen and other utility workers come the insurance adjusters. My hubs was one for about 10 years. Those guys work horrendous hours to try to get policy holders paid so that they can start to rebuild. However in the case of these horrible floods, there are going to be many, many cases where the home policy was never set to include flood so there may be a lot of people who don’t get much from their insurance.
My focus is on the adjusters though because I know that they see devastation up close and personal and they are deeply affected by what they see and smell and the debris they have to climb over, under and in. They literally try to get as much money as they can for policy holders. They don’t always succeed but they do try. I have watched my hubs cry for the people he has tried to help when he can’t get more for them.
