Michael Dukakis once referred to himself as a ‘card carrying member of the ACLU’. The Bush campaign hung that one around his neck like a rubber chicken, the ACLU being a criminals lobby, among other thing. Certain Democrats (e.g. Michael Kinsley) were indignant that he would besmirch Dukakis’ good name for paying dues to this defender of civil liberties. Kinsley at this point in his life is too ill to say much, but what about Dukakis? Bueller? Bueller?
