Last night I stumbled across a You Tube channel with clips from the first 5 seasons of Saturday Night Live, including the introduction of Don Novello as Fr. Guido Sarducci. Somehow he managed to be funny without being offensive or disrespectful to the Faith, or at least that’s how I remember it. Two of his sketches that I clearly remember seeing as a teenager were his comparison between St. Patrick’s Day and St. Joseph’s Day (“it’s like having a birthday two days after Christmas!”) and his proposal to alternate “Big Christmas” (the all-out parties and presents binge we know today) with “Little Christmas” (no carols until Christmas Eve, gifts only to immediate family, generally less hoopla).
