The officer carrying the umbrella was based upon Major Allison Digby Tatham-Warter, who brought an umbrella into battle because he could never recall the daily passwords and assumed that no one would think that anyone other “than a bloody fool of an Englishman” would carry an umbrella in a combat zone. Completely without fear, he would make humorous quips while in combat. In civilian life he was a big game hunter and organized safaris. He married and had three daughters and lived until 1993, dying at age 75.
