This seems to me to have two meanings:
* Avoid witnessing the mess and compromise that fallen men utilize in the name of law.
and
* Avoid being subject to the law’s penalties by following the law.
Are both meanings intended?
I thought illustration was maxim; i.e., “Stonewall!”
The same is true for sausages, IIRC.
