I realize ex-Cardinal, Mr. McCarrick is still alive, but Shakespeare’s observation is otherwise apt in his case. He used his influence to promote cynical, amoral men who owed him their careers; men who he could count on to close their eyes to what he was doing if not actively cover for him. Cardinals Tobin, McElroy, Cupich, Farrell— they wouldn’t have their red hats without McCarrick—their reward for running interference for evil.
