STARKE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man was executed Thursday for killing a 14-year-old babysitter and a 38-year-old mother of two in separate attacks months apart in 1984 while children were sleeping in the homes he targeted.
Duane Owen was pronounced dead at 6:14 p.m. after a lethal injection at Florida State Prison, according to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office. One of Florida’s longest-held death row inmates, Owen was 23 at the time of the attacks and 62 when he was executed.
Owen declined to make a final statement. The procedure began at 6:01 p.m., with Owen’s arms twitching and his breathing becoming heavier as the sedative took effect. The warden made sure Owen was unconscious before before lethal drugs were administered.
Owen was sentenced to death for the March 24, 1984, rape and fatal stabbing of Karen Slattery, 14, and for the rape and deadly hammer attack two months later on Georgianna Worden, 38. Both killings occurred in Palm Beach County.

As a general rule, I’m not pro-capital punishment, but for people like Owen … They should’ve brought Old Sparky out of retirement.
I agree with CAG. Either execution by electric chair or execution by hanging would have been appropriate. Execution by gas chamber or execution by firing squad would have been acceptable, too. But sedation and lethal injection? That’s too good for this criminal. However, where he is going it won’t make much of a difference.
It should not take longer than about six years to run through the appeals and deliberations over executive clemency. This man’s trials should have concluded in 1985 and his appeals in 1991. The courts have decayed into a venue for lawyers to play footsie with each other.
We don’t need veterinarians doing this. You have militiamen drilling on a week end, call up four groups of 12 and send each to one of four loci. At the prison before dawn, outfit four vans and send each to one of the loci. Decide by lot into which one you place the convict. When the prisoner arrives at the location, you put him in front of a cement wall and you hand out rifles to the militiamen, half filled with bullets, half with blanks. That’s your firing squad. Execute him in a public place, just not with a multitude of witnesses.
As for the ACLU, do they do one thing nowadays which doesn’t mark them as an organization working to make the world worse?

The ACLU claims that Owen was not given gender affirmation. As Art Deco says: Owen ought to have been executed 33 years ago. When I moved to Maryland 20 years ago all the library books claimed that Helen Keller was a lesbian not permitted to be a lesbian and that Michaelangelo and DaVinci were homosexuals. Who knows? The ACLU knows.

I can’t imagine the ongoing pain the families of the victims have had to endure for decades. Civil Libertarians and shonky limp-wristed bishops need to look the victims families in the eye.
That it should take over 30 years to execute this man makes another unconscionable blot on the criminal justice system. Once guilt has been established beyond all reasonable doubt and the appellate process has been properly carried out, the sentence of death should be carried out in a reasonable time without unnecessary delay. There is merit to the old axiom, “Justice delayed is Justice denied”. A possible solution to future unnecessary delays in promptly executing lawful sentences would be to change the last name of the offender to “Trump “, thereby removing the concerns of such groups as the ACLU.

I have no moral or theological problem with the idea of capital punishment. That it has always been considered morally acceptable by the Church, despite PF’s attempt to change the doctrine by monkeying with the CCC, which is not an infallible document, is beyond question. JP II also took a shot at it, of course, but he never said it was intrinsically immoral, just that he did not believe society needs to keep using it. My problem with CP is solely related to its inconsistent application here in the US, even before the Democrats began seriously working to destroy the American justice system a few years ago. The now retired criminal defense lawyer who once wrote the St. Corbinian’s Bear blog convinced me through his writing that the administration of the death penalty in Illinois was so terribly flawed that it failed to meet the basic requirements of criminal justice. It could not be much different elsewhere, IMO. But the idea, spouted by leftists and far too many Catholics, that one must oppose the death penalty in toto if one professes to be pro-life, is absurd.

If an unrepentant murderer of homicide in the first degree relives his crime of raping and murderer a seven year old child and glories in his power over her life and death a million times a day those holding this erroneous belief are actually complicit in his enjoyment of his murder of homicide in the first degree.

Without the death penalty executed through the condemned murderer’s power of attorney, too many murderers are reliving and enjoying their crimes.
