The constant videos of mobs assaulting individuals indicate that being surrounded by a mob in a vehicle is a potentially life threatening situation. The idea that it is legitimate protest for mobs to shut down roads is too absurd for words. That is a riot and in a riot the only rule of safety is to get away from the rioters as quickly as possible.

Legitimate protest? Yes!
Riot and threaten people’s lives? Mow them down.
Street demonstrations should be permitted only if they have a legal permit. Otherwise they should be shut down immediately before things get out of hand. As they inevitably will.
Peace keeping officers must impose peace on the mob.
