A tradition with democrat supporters. Goes back to the election of 1800 when the Jefferson supporters trashed John Adams, admittedly not a great political candidate. Went on to a repeat performance when his son, John Quincy Adams ran against Andrew Jackson, a thoroughly immoral character. Almost every presidential election since has involved a democrat descent into the dirt with the exception of Kennedy in 1960, who carried some pretty heavy baggage himself.

I suppose his treatment of Native Americans, his illegal attempt at marriage to an already married woman, his ham handed management of the National Bank abolition and his tendency to settle personal disputes by dueling don’t count? The fact that Ursuline Nuns prayed for his Victory at the Battle of New Orleans in 1818 does not give him a pass
