It’s all about class. He and his parents are wealthy liberal urban elites, his parents also being academic aristocrats. They are part and parcel of the subscriber base of The New York Times. He was the paymaster of their party in the last election. They could care less about the billions he stole.

Crypto has an inherent value of zero, not even the tenuous promise of a profligate government to pay. I have little sympathy for those who got sucked up in this scam no matter their “innocence”.
