The European Union talks constantly about democracy in principal, but seems to be opposed in practice to it. Ostensibly this is a fight between Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Polish President Karol Tadeusz Nawrocki over the courts, but it is actually a struggle between Tusk, who wishes Poland to be stripped of its Catholic identity and to become one of the cookie cutter countries that make up the EU, he spent a good part of his career as part of the EU ruling elite in Brussels, and Nawrocki, a historian by trade, who wishes Poland to retain its Catholic identity and its historic, unique, ethos as a nation.  It is unclear who will win this fight. Stay tuned.
