But for General George Washington and the private soldiers willing to risk their necks in an apparently hopeless cause there would be no United States today. Washington, after the War, called American victory in the Revolution a Standing Miracle. It was a miracle accomplished by God through a Virginia planter, and amateur soldier, who out thought and out fought, with many defeats along the way, the finest army in the World. Reading about the American Revolution I am still struck by how unlikely American victory was, at least from the vantage point of just before Christmas in the year 1776.
