Transhumanism: The Coming Heresy?

[1] Now the serpent was more subtle than any of the beasts of the earth which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman: Why hath God commanded you, that you should not eat of every tree of paradise? [2] And the woman answered him, saying: Of the fruit of the trees that are in paradise we do eat: [3] But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of paradise, God hath commanded us that we should not eat; and that we should not touch it, lest perhaps we die. [4] And the serpent said to the woman: No, you shall not die the death. [5] For God doth know that in what day soever you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened: and you shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil.

Genesis 3:  1-4

Please watch the video and discuss.  Transhumanism is as old as the Garden of Eden and as evil as the Serpent.  The old lie is that we can become gods and join Satan in his rebellion against God.  A Tower of Babel for moderns.  CS Lewis saw this coming:

Our policy, for the moment, is to conceal ourselves. Of course this has not always been so. We are really faced with a cruel dilemma. When the humans disbelieve in our existence we lose all he pleasing results of direct terrorism and we make no magicians. On the other hand, when they believe in us, we cannot make them materialists and sceptics. At least, not yet. I have great hopes that we shall learn in due time how to emotionalise and mythologise their science to such an extent that what is, in effect, belief in us, (though not under that name) will creep in while the human mind remains closed to belief in the Enemy. The “Life Force”, the worship of sex, and some aspects of Psychoanalysis, may here prove useful. If once we can produce our perfect work-the Materialist Magician, the man, not using, but veritably worshipping, what he vaguely calls “Forces” while denying the existence of “spirits”-then the end of the war will be in sight.

The video is correct. The Wikipedia article on Transhumanism indicates this idea has been around for a long time and the term itself was first coined in 1957.

I recall reading sci-fi novels about this in the 70s and 80s. There was a recent show on Amazon Prime TV called The Feed. People could become effectively immortal by having their memories uploaded to the cloud. These were called mundles – short for memory bundles. Then the disembodied personalities could be downloaded into alternate bodies, overwriting the personalities already living in the brains of those bodies. That happened in the TV show and chaos ensued. When finally The Feed was destroyed, people no longer knew what to do or how to behave. My commentary is here:

We will create our own Anti-Christ. God will give us up to our pride and arrogance as our own punishment.

Like all quality heresies, it has a bit of truth to it. In the end, to become one with God, we must give up our self and stop letting petty concerns hold us back from life with him.

But also like so many heresies, it is only a part of the truth. We give up our self to God, in order that He might give it back to us, more realized and more distinct than ever before. The final goal of heaven is not homogenity, but MORE distinction, more differences, more uniqueness between us all. God asks us to give up our self to die in order that we might be raised again into even more of our self in eternity.
