Carson v. Makin

Great decision by the Supreme Court today while we are waiting for the Dobbs decision:

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 Tuesday that a Maine tuition assistance program violated the First Amendment’s Free Exercise Clause for excluding religious schools from eligibility.

The program provides tuition assistance for students without a local public school to attend private institutions – as long as the funding is not used for religious or “sectarian” teaching. 

“Maine’s ‘nonsectarian’ requirement for its otherwise generally available tuition assistance payments violates the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the court’s opinion in the case of Carson v. Maykin. “Regardless of how the benefit and restriction are described, the program operates to identify and exclude otherwise eligible schools on the basis of their religious exercise.”

Go here to read the rest.  The Maine law singled out religious schools for discrimination.  Such discrimination began in the 19th century to make certain that Catholic schools received no government funds, which was ironic since a driving force behind the foundation of Catholic schools in this nation was a desire of Catholic parents not to subject their kids to the heavy Protestant influence in the public schools of that time.  Now, many public schools push forms of Leftism that are anathema to Christianity.  The First Amendment does not allow the State to discriminate in this manner on the grounds that certain beliefs are characterized as religious and others are not.  Leftism in its present incarnation clearly functions as a form of religion and in blue states tends to be an established Church.
