Seventy Years a Queen

 

My sainted mother was a Newfie of pure Irish descent, with fiery red hair and a tempestuous, but lovable, temperament to match.  She had small use for the British monarchy (she taught me and my brother all the traditional Irish rebel songs) except for the current reigning monarch who she adored.  My own fondness for Queen Elizabeth dates from the following:

Queen Elizabeth is the best thing about the British Monarchy. She will be a hard act to follow.

The Queen, her husband, and her mother have provided an example of the virtues of the pre-war order. Her sister always insisted on being stimulated in some way, behaved stupidly, behaved badly, then made a sad wreck of herself. The next generation split three ways, as the next generation did in the rest of the anglosphere. About two out of six have kept their noses clean; two or three have had embarrassments, not necessarily of their own making; and one or two have beclowned themeselves.

Not confident that’s entirely true of Phillip on all levels. But we will never know. The Queen was good for Phillip. Another match may have resulted in something similar to Charles or even Andrew. Ann and Edward have taken after their mother.
