Weather-Vane in Disguise

Go here to read the story.  I hate to say it, but the country may have dodged a bullet when Romney ineptly threw the 2012 election away.

Amen to that. And when McCain quit trying in ’08, as well. I held my nose to vote for both of them, given the alternatives, and today, I’m no longer convinced they would have been better than what we got. I believe it’s arguable, at least, that eight years of Obama (among other things, of course) brought us Trump and the things he was able to accomplish against all odds. Would that have happened if McCain or Mittens had won? Given what we’ve seen and heard from Romney since 2016, I would say not.

To explain myself, as I just realized my last sentence above may not make sense: With Romney exposed as a pretend Republican, and knowing as we do now that the GOP establishment likely would have gone along with him in most respects, we could assume for argument’s sake a worst-case scenario, i.e., that a Romney administration would have looked a lot like Obama’s in domestic and foreign policy, (minus the apology tour, one hopes).
But even if that happened, and caused some significant loss of public support by 2016, I would guess that Trump probably would not have sought to unseat an incumbent Republican.

And don’t forget, he was endorsed by the Republican elite. Even made a promotional video of him visiting George Bush Sr. at his house in Houston during the campaign. They’re all ***holes, Democrat and Republican alike. They look down on us like we are all deplorable.

I don’t blame Romney for going incognito.
His voting record could be more agreeable, but, per the American Conservative Union, it’s a great deal closer to the median of the Republican caucus than it is to the median of the Democratic caucus. There are about two dozen Republican members who are more troublesome to party whips than is Romney.
The trouble is that he’s willing to promote the Democratic Party’s grotesque PR capers, as are about a dozen other members of Congress, under the smarmy pretense that ‘muh principles’ require it.
And, of course, his interest in running for Congress makes no sense. He was 71 years old, running and sitting required considerable inconvenience for himself and his wife, and it took away from all the actually agreeable and valuable things he might do – avocations, time with grandchildren, business projects. Your single best guess is that it’s an exercise in spite (something at which the NeverTrump residue seems to excel).

I think he’d have been a disappointment in office, but normal range. I wouldn’t attribute McCain’s loss to anything but circumstance. Putting a pair of grifters in charge of his campaign did not help, but it’s hard to believe it was decisive. In Romney’s case, you might just blame the candidate, though I suspect vote fraud may have been part of the stew as well.

His presidency would have been totally disorganized and a disaster. I say this from having been a volunteer on the 2012 campaign, which was a total disaster, computerwise and otherwise. Totally unexpected from a “businessman,” former governor, and Head of the ???? Olympics for Salt Lake City.

I’ve heard about the IT problems. I’m wondering why he couldn’t recruit someone more capable.

“I’m wondering why he couldn’t recruit someone more capable.” The rumor I’ve heard is that the sabotage was deliberate.

Roe v. Wade is dead! Rejoice!

Can’t wait to see how Shea and Greydanus spin this.

Romney is the perfect example of the Peter Principle in action. As Governor, he had the potential for accomplishment but could do little harm because of the state laws and division of responsibility. He, of course, did little of either. Still, he served an object lesson for all of us in making future choices.

Romney is the perfect example of the Peter Principle in action.

The Peter Principle was an amusing volume about organizational life, not literally true, but containing vignettes familiar to many. Doesn’t apply to Romney at all. He wasn’t promoted through the ranks in Massachusetts politics, much less promoted to the point where his incompetence was manifest. Incompetence has never been his problem. He isn’t a pretentious man either. What he is by all appearances is a vessel of empty ambition or perhaps empty competitiveness. He’s George H.W. Bush without the dues paid in combat, but with a more lucrative business and somewhat more personal dignity.

Pierre Delecto out on the town. Any one got a picture of him in disguise? I’m thinking Peter Sellers as Gil Gabois in one of the Pink Panthers.
Weather Vane is apt.

Agreed. I posted the same story (for the six people who read my FB page 🙂 and the possibility that I may owe an apology to Barack Hussein Obama disturbs me greatly.
