A Brave Man

He was sentenced to eight years in the GULAG.  I bet he thought every minute was worth it.  His whole adult life he had lived in the lies of the Soviet State and to be able to finally tell the truth about it by putting “Comedy” on a ballot of a fake Soviet election was inspired. Whenever Man has stumbled into a black hole, it is such valiant souls who help lead us out.

And the Russians have lapsed back to the autocracy of the Czars and the totalitarians of the Soviets. Like the Bourbons; they learn nothing and forget nothing.

Contemporary Russia is not totalitarian and its institutions are arguably more pluralistic than at any time in the last 400 years bar the period running from 1905 to 1917 and 1988 to 2004. The country is not at war, is not suffering an economic depression, and is not suffering a breakdown of public order. Given the abuses of the courts and the security state here, I am not sure our dissenters are safer.
