Even in eighth grade, that math would have been easy. Then and now, the gramma rules seem weird and unnecessary, rules are intuitively known by inspection (reading often).
No surprise, I studied engineering

Echoing what David said. I could probably handle the math (except I never can remember how much a bushel is) but not so much the English.

Wasn’t 8th grade the junior college equivalent? I know it was still reasonably normal for my grandfather to have left after 6th grade, since he wasn’t going into anything advanced, and that was after WWII.
digs around Looks like it varied by region; High Schools were “not abnormal” in the north east at about the time the test says it’s from, but took longer to hit places west. Having graduated high school was an automatic qualification to be a teacher.
The school involved may have also been differentiating itself from trade schools, which would be serving the same age demographic.
