The tip of a very dirty iceberg.  Christ emphasized love of money as the root of all evil because it has ever been the cardinal sin of the clergy.

About that biblical impoverished woman who gave her last penny? These guys probably took it.
Can’t argue with Christ, but I suspect that lust, power, and pride are running a close second to mammon.

It’s a start. But that’s the thing–it has to be a start.
There’s so much more along these lines (e.g., the Papal Foundation’s loan, Bertone’s apartment renovation) that one sacrificial ex-cardinal won’t suffice. Not if this is serious.

Suggest that aside from it’s physical plant, ordinary chattels, and artistic treasures. the property of the Church (and the Holy See in particular) be held in the form of cash and securities. Such assets might be domiciled in the host country or in a menu of safe harbors and managed by lay professionals. Cdl. McIntyre entereed the priesthood after a decade working in finance, but his skill set is indubitably unusual in the clergy and diversion from their primary tasks. While we’re at it, just what is the point of the Vatican Bank?
