It would be good for us to remember that, with our modern seminaries and their requisite university degrees, we would neither have St John Vianney nor St John of Cupertino.
We would have… well, what we currently have. University men who often think they are cleverer than all the priests, bishops, and cardinals who came before them.
I humbly suggest that the Church would be better filled with men of less learning and greater holiness. More St John Vianney, and less Cardinal Wolsey.
Besides, think of the savings on rectory expenses if they were all like St John Vianney!(A in hagiography if you get what I mean 🙂)

At the beginning of every test, I invoked St. Thomas Aquinas and St. JOSEPH Cupertino to cover the span of students.

I was mixing him with St John of Capistrano.
(Just a *little* different!!)
However, I’ll wager that due to his gentle nature the saint would answer a prayer addressing him as either John or Joseph.
I would dare say that the seminarian/priestly candidates who have caused the Church the greatest destruction were those who were brilliant theology students like Hus, Luther, Zwingli, Cranmer, and more recently, those like Charles Curran, Raymond Brown, and Hans Kung.
