Blessed Margaret Pole’s biography on EWTN is lengthy and interesting. She was martyred not only for her refusal to acknowledge Henry VIII as head of the Church of England but also because she was a Plantagenet. Henry VII, the first Tudor king, had most of the male Plantagenets in the Tower of London. Margaret was a lady in waiting and close friend to Queen Katherine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first wife. When Princess Mary was born Margaret became her governess. There was thought that Mary would wed a son of Margaret’s. However Reginald chose the church instead; became a cardinal in Rome.
Margaret was known as the Catholic Royal Martyr.
