Predictions for 2026

And once again I boldly go where angels fear to tread:

  1.  Pope Leo will cease being a complete clone of Pope Francis.  Changing circumstances and a distance from his predecessor’s death will help ensure that.
  2.  Trump will broker a Ukraine-Russia peace.  More of a cease fire of exhaustion perhaps.
  3.   At least one, perhaps two, US Supreme Court Justice will resign at the end of this term.
  4.   More than one EU member will break away to join a free trade alliance with the US.
  5.   Restrictions on the traditional Mass will be eased.
  6.   The Somali welfare scandal will lead to indictments of several political figures in Minnesota.
  7.   The Republicans will maintain control of Congress, barely, in the midterms.
  8.   A major scandal involving Pope Francis will break.
  9.   Rupnik will release a tell all book which will be the start of a wave of such books out of the Vatican.
  10.   As always, Don will be wrong in some of his predictions.

  1. The trend of people in their 20’s converting to the Catholic Church and increasingly attending Mass will continue in 2026. The Church is never down and out.

Prediction 1 is entirely dependent on prediction 8 or 9, I think.

Since Mr. Justice Thomas is 77 and Mr. Justice Alito 75, I’d be pleased if they’d retire while the Republicans still have the Senate. I’d like the Chief Justice to go as well as he strikes me as a multidirectional placator and not a leader. The Democrats will do what they can to smear anyone nominated, of course. The Kavanaugh imbroglio was as disgusting and absurd as any; we’ll get more of that because the Democrats suffered electorally not at all for their atrocious behavior.

My prediction: figures in the French establishment will in the next 16 months try to pull a rabbit out of their hat to prevent Jordan Bardella from being elected President of France. The manufacture of Emmanuel Macron’s presidential candidacy in 2016 was a tour de force and beginning to end it did not take more than about a year. However, such an option presumes there’s someone they can sell to weakly affiliated voters. Another possibility would be the manufacture of sketchy criminal charges to force his exclusion. They’ve tried that with Marine Le Pen, then discovered that NR is not a personalistic movement and they got stuck facing a younger candidate with the same electoral base. I suppose it might be possible to spring a trap on JB when it is too late to replace him; not sure if that would be possible under French law. Another gambit would be mass naturalization of foreigners (a tactic to which I suspect the Starmer regime in Britain will resort in a few years).

6. The Somali welfare scandal will lead to indictments of several political figures in Minnesota.

… And nothing will ever come of them.

As to #1, Leo XIV isn’t a complete clone of Francis now, although I think their views align far more than I would like them to.
#5 is already happening to some degree.
Rupnik certainly knows where a lot of bodies are buried to be sure.

“ A straight man who does not believe in open borders and climate change will be promoted to the Episcopate.”

Chances of that happening are between hell no and are you out of your damned mind?

But hey, a guy can dream.

If the Centre will hold until the arrival of the next White Knight, there is hope for the future, if not, the term Underground Church will take on a whole new meaning and will not be pleasant.
