They often do in comfort. CS Lewis was of course aware of the poisonous nature of academic politics and he had a strong aversion to bureaucracy in all its forms. To commit a terrible sin in the throes of strong emotion or madness is bad enough. To commit terrible sins because you are a bureaucrat and your duty is to carry out policy is likely far worse.
