McCrery was also responsible for the beautiful remodel of the Washington DC parish of St. Mary Mother of God. That parish had been home to the DC TLM from the mid-80’s, when Pope John Paul II permitted ‘indult Masses’. Sadly, after almost forty years there, the TLM community was suppressed three years ago because of Traditiones Custodes.

I think back to when I lived in Knoxville Catholics were few and far between. Sunday Mass was celebrated in a small former Protestant church on a hill top above Cumberland Ave. Then at the campus edge a brick box was built with a large multi-purpose auditorium for Mass and classrooms. I taught 3rd grade CCD for a few years. The students were mostly professors’ children. Next time we drive through Knoxpatch, as we called it then, we will definitely stop at the cathedral.
