Malcolm Muggeridge interviewing Robert Graves. This would have been prior to Muggeridge’s conversion to Catholicism. Graves’ religion was ill-defined most of his life, but in his classic World War I memoir, Goodbye to All That, he noted that he had no use for the Church of England chaplains while praising the courage of Catholic priests who served as chaplains who he observed in the trenches. Two great writers having a chat.
The Monarch in Great Britain is Head of the Church of England since Henry VIII. The Monarch does not need God since he claims to be divine. Man needs a purpose in life especially is he is a chaplain.
It appears Muggeridge admired Chesterton – to the extent that he quoted him here.
I believe Muggeridge was the first person to attribute this quote to Chesterton. It’s not found in any of his writings, though he certainly penned more than one piece supporting the gist of this quote.
