June 15, 1775: And So It Began

 

A Virginia planter, who last saw military service a decade and a half before, took command of an Army of amateur soldiers lacking ammunition, food, shoes, uniforms, you name it.  In the years to come he would lead this force in battle many times against the greatest army of its day, and ultimately prevail.  As Washington said after the War, the outcome of the Revolution was a Standing Miracle, and the means that God used to bring about this miracle was to give us George Washington to lead our fight against long odds.

Catholic France made a great contribution to the success of our War of Independence. It was no doubt a factor in Gen. Pres. Washington’s benign attitude towards the Catholic faithful; a sentiment not shared by most Americans at the time.

Catholic Spain made a large contribution to the cause for independence, but that is usually overlooked. The Spanish Navy kicked Great Britain out of the Mississippi Valley and the wealthy ladies of Havana (sounds impossible now) made a financial contribution to the American cause
