During his train whistle stop campaign in 1948, Truman referred to his wife all the time as “The Boss”. Bess Truman got tired of it and told Harry the next time he did it she was getting off the train and she didn’t care how fast it was going. One of my favorite first ladies. She hated Washington, loved her home in Independence, Missouri and said that a political wife had two duties: to keep her hat on straight and to keep her mouth shut in public.

Bess sounded like a great lady. Straight shooter.
Lauren Becall was stunning. Beautiful eyes. I’ll admire her vocal stance against plastic surgery. She aged gracefully.
This wouldn’t compare to Marilyn Monroe singing “Happy Birthday Mr President” in that breathy tone. I wonder if someone put her up to it or if it was all Marilyn being Marilyn.
“I wonder if someone put her up to it or it was all Marilyn being Marilyn”
Probably the latter. At the time Marilyn was filming what ended up being her last and unfinished movie, “Something’s Got to Give”, and she attempted to include a nude swimming pool scene in it; she had also attempted to include nude shots in a previous film, “The Misfits”. It’s often claimed that she was fired from “Something’s Got to Give” because she interrupted filming to attend the gala (a Democratic Party fundraiser featuring many other celebrities) but she got permission to attend from 20th Century Fox well in advance.
